Enginerdiness!

So Microsoft is beginning to work on the next Windows…

Category: Ruminations

…and it sounds like it is already on a shaky foundation!

So, in October, developers are meeting to discuss the next release of Windows which will be Windows 7. Whatever happened to Windows 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6, I don’t know, but Windows 7 it will be. The very first part of the description about Windows 7 was enough to set my teeth to grinding and put me on edge. The foundation for Windows 7 will be none other than Windows Vista itself. OK, so let me get this straight. Because of one of the greatest flops of your company’s history, you will be building the bigger, better and newer development on that flop? I’m no software engineer, but I like to apply this to structural engineering terms. I can build the world’s most fabulous bridge, whether it be the Golden Gate, the Brooklyn Bridge or even the Firth of Forth bridge. But, if I build this wonderful bridge on weak soils, guess what happens? The bridge sinks and then collapses. Lovely.

And if no one believes me about Windows Vista being a failure, you can either send me a comment where I can discuss my trials and tribulations with Windows Vista or just look at the statistics posted by Gizmodo about how many people have downgraded to XP from Vista. I mean come on…if 35% of people want to downgrade from the newest thing out there, that has to tell you something. Plus, the other 65% probably didn’t want to go through the hassle of downgrading.

Anyway, I’m not looking forward to 18 months from now, but if I still have my troubles with Vista then, I might have to install it and pray they worked the kinks out.
