Britain Flight Patterns

February 21st, 2009 | Category: Geekery at its best!

I saw this video and was quite impressed. I never thought about the GPS embedded in planes to capture latitude, longitude as well as altitude. Capturing those and then tracking them all with a global satellite image has created quite a unique video.

The mafia wants to monopolize on green energy

February 18th, 2009 | Category: General News

…at least, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Wind Farms in Sicily Almost Led By Mafia

Wind Farms in Sicily Almost Led By Mafia

So, the mafia, Cosa Nostra, in Sicily has long been getting money by bidding (and winning by cheating) on contracts for public works. Back in 2003, a proposal came up for a wind farm to be constructed on the island. Members of Cosa Nostra bribed officials with luxury cars, thousands of euros as well as breaking in to see a rival’s bid so they can counter it which all led to the eventual arrest of eight men. The businessman heading all this up had ties to Matteo Messina Denaro, one of the top bosses for the mafia.

Does this sound reminiscent of “The Sopranos” with the construction company? Maybe? That’s where they got all their ideas!

Who knew that the green power that Italy would have received would have been tied to their very own mafia that “protects” them?

An innovative shock absorber could reduce fuel costs by up to 10%

…thanks again to the brainiacs at MIT.

Regenerative Shock Absorbers

Regenerative Shock Absorbers

Shakeel Avadhany, the Project Leader, is a senior student in Materials Science at MIT. He and his team have created a shock absorber that can generate electricity from driving over bumps. This enery created is enough to power the alternator in a truck, thereby decreasing the drain on the battery and increasing the fuel efficiency by up to 10%. They seem to have thought of most every angle, including what should happen if the system failed. If that is the case, the shock absorber would go back to being a normal shock.

Right now, the tests have proved all of this based on large vehicles. The first official production will be done for the military, to increase the efficiency of Hummers out in the field.

Shakeel has created his own company looking into this, called Levant Power Corp., and by this summer they will be releasing their first fine tuned version ready for release this summer. Talks will then begin with Wal-Mart, for starters, in which the estimates they could save Wal-Mart up to $13 million a year in fuel costs.

Do you get the feeling that Mother Nature knows what she wants to look like

…especially when she forms trees in her image, similar to how God formed man? Or maybe this is one of the long lost Ent Wives that were lost so long ago in Middle Earth.

Ever want to put a restaurant out of business?

February 11th, 2009 | Category: Gadgets

…if so, you need the incredible flying Cockroach-icopter. Everyone needs to have one of these this year!

So, you ever been to a restaurant, and you just hated it SO much? Well, if so, and you want to call down the health inspectors, try flying this remote controlled thing around in a crowded restaurant and see what happens. Granted, it would be much more convincing if it was just on the ground with wheels, but this could be just as interesting. And given that the size of the cockroach is bordering on 6″ long, it doesn’t lend a hand to believability. Maybe choose a restaurant near Lake Norman’s McGuire Nuclear Station…we can say it’s a mutant cockroach! Any way you look at it, it could be a fun toy to mess around with if you have a spare $60 laying around.

Back to the grindstone with the blog

February 10th, 2009 | Category: Geekery at its best!

Now that I know that I have at least TWO fans, I might motivate myself to spend a bit more time on the blog. It’s been close to a year since I started, and although I was mostly faithful to the one-a-day post, I’ve gotten pretty lax as of late.

So, to kick things back up in style, I now present to you, the world’s most disgusting slide. Sad to say, it appears there are at least two version of the same “themed slide”. Let your kids enjoy this one!

Just a quick post about a Trekkie’s favorite movie…

February 09th, 2009 | Category: Geekery at its best!

Robot Chicken, one of the best shows ever, did an “operatic” version of “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan”. In remembrance of Ricardo Montalbán, enjoy this short little video clip.
